Lungu Will Steal August Elections - Sishuwa

Historian and political analyst Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa has issued another dire warning ahead of August’s general elections, predicting that President Edgar Lungu will win the vote as a result of the “dubious voters’ register”.

Writing on Twitter last week, the academic forecast that President Lungu will be on the ballot papers in August as a result of the Constitutional Court’s 2018 decision to allow the president to run for a third term.

He predicted that President Lungu would go on to “win” the election (his quotation marks) because of the “dubious voters’ register”.

“Brace yourself for a minimum of 5 more years of this terrible NIGHTMARE” Sishuwa warned.

Sishuwa, a lecturer at the University of Zambia has been a regular critic of the new voters’ roll, first voicing concerns about the timeframe for registering new voters in October 2020.

Earlier this month he broke the news that the newly assembled register massively favours the incumbent Patriotic Front, with thousands of new voters registered in historic PF strongholds while the number of voters in opposition seats diminished.

For example, in President Lungu’s home seat of Eastern Province, the number of registered voters increased by 120,324. Meanwhile, in the historically UPND-voting Western Province, the number of voters fell by 51,772.

On Friday Sishuwa therefore warned that without “mass popular political action” President Lungu was unlikely to be voted out of office.

“No elections that he fully controls will evict Lungu from government. Our duty is to persistently, consistently and clearly keep propounding these simple basic truths,” he charged.
