Sibanye-Stillwater Express Continued Interest In Mopani Copper Mine

On Wednesday, Sibanye-Stillwater announced its interest in the Mopani Copper mine. CEO Neal Froneman stated that the company “remain interested” in the mine.

The news comes a year after the company had initially registered interest in the mine.

The company, which produces mostly platinum metals and gold, has recently expanded operations to include battery production through the mining of nickel and lithium.

Sibanye also explained that the favourable business policies initiated by President Hakainde Hichilema attracted the company to Zambia.

Froneman stated, “We like Zambia, we like what the new president is doing there.”

Currently, the Mopani mine requires a $300 million investment to fund an underground expansion. The 90-year-old mine has the potential to produce 225,000 tonnes of copper annually when at operational capacity.
