The Zambian Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane, has met with the IMF and World Bank, as well as the British Government in an effort to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss the positive impacts of current economic reforms within Zambia.

The Minister and his delegation are currently attending the 2022 IMF Spring meetings in Washington DC.

Overall, feedback has been positive with a statement by the Government describing the meetings as “supportive,” with more due to take place over the coming days.

Additionally, Britain and Zambia used the meetings to discuss potential deals to strengthen development cooperation between the two countries.

Dr Musokotwane also used the conference as an opportunity to discuss support regarding Zambia’s debt restructuring process. To which Ms Ford encouraged creditors to maintain their commitments to the common framework.

Following the meeting, Ms Ford tweeted, “Met Zambian Minister of Finance (and National Planning Dr Musokotwane to discuss their progress made on economic reforms to drive growth. All creditors must now deliver on commitments made to the common framework.”

In another positive step towards the encouragement of international trade in Zambia, details were also released about the launch of a Business Advisory Council Consultative Process.

Details regarding the initiative were announced during an interview with the American think tank, The Atlantic Council, and were later confirmed by Dr Musokotwane.

The initiative will encourage consultancy between the public and private sectors as well as other economic stakeholders.

This alongside international discussions at the IMF Spring Meetings, and the encouragement of strong bilateral ties with Britain, act as another positive step taken by the New Dawn Government to encourage business and deliver on their manifesto promises.
