Zambia To Become Leader In African Nickel Production
President Hakainde Hichilema has explained that the US$250 million Enterprise Nickel mine project will help provide the core materials used in the batteries of electric motor vehicles.
The new mining project is part of First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) US$1.35 billion investment in Zambia.
The announcement came during the official ground breaking ceremony for the project in the Kalumbilla district.
During the ceremony, he noted that the project will aid development in Zambia and will project the country into becoming a clean and environmental friendly nation.
The president stated that “The vision of Zambia moving from a brown energy to green energy is slowly becoming a reality with such projects coming on board.”
The mine is set to have the highest level of nickel production in Africa and could create as many as 18,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The plant will generate opportunities for household income for both locals and increase revenue for the Zambian economy which will then be used to fund public services.
The mine will also aim to produce 30,000 tonnes of nickel per year.
President Hichilema also stated that his government will continue to work with investors and partners to ensure that poverty is reduced and meaningful jobs are created.
He said, “we are ready to work with any and all that love progress to reduce poverty, create jobs and household income.”
Tristan Pascal, the FQM CEO, said that Zambia will continue to be a company favourite for investment due to its welcoming business environment created by the New Dawn Government.
