Zambia and DRC Presidents Open Vital Trade Link via Luapula River Bridge

President Hakainde Hichilema, alongside President Antoine Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), officially opened the Kasomeno-Kasenga-Chalwe-Kabila-Mwenda Road and the Luapula River Bridge, a part of the One Stop Border Post initiative. This project strengthens the diplomatic ties between Zambia and the DRC.

The Kasomeno-Mwenda Road Project underscores Zambia's commitment to enhancing connectivity and economic integration within the region, employing innovative Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) to stimulate economic growth while relieving fiscal pressure.

The road project links the DRC to Africa's east coast through Zambia's Nakonde border and Tanzania, aiming to provide the shortest route from the DRC to the Indian Ocean, thus unlocking substantial trade opportunities. The Luapula River Bridge is expected to handle over 400 trucks, creating a vital trade route between Luapula province in Zambia and Lubumbashi in the DRC.

Apart from boosting trade and economic growth, the Kasomeno-Mwenda Road and Bridge Project offer prospects for job creation and infrastructure development. Local communities, especially in Mwense, stand to benefit from increased economic activity and job opportunities during the construction phase.

The collaborative effort involving Zambia, the DRC, and Hungary's GED Africa highlights the commitment to using local materials and employing local individuals, particularly youth and women, underlining the project's dedication to community involvement and empowerment.

The inauguration of the Kasomeno-Kasenga-Chalwe-Kabila-Mwenda Road and Luapula River Bridge signifies a significant milestone in advancing regional integration, connectivity, and economic progress.

The infrastructure project is anticipated to positively impact the lives of people in Zambia and the DRC by promoting wealth creation, reducing transport expenses, and contributing to poverty reduction.
