1,500 Mini-Grids Will Expand Zambian Energy Access

Hakainde Hichilema has presented a plan to transform Zambia’s energy capabilities to the Rockefeller Foundation’s Global Leadership Council (GLC).

The plan aims to secure more widespread energy independence, helping to overcome energy access struggles faced by many communities, through 1,500 ‘mini-grid’ power outposts.

President Hichilema also told the GLC that the first of the mini-grids, which will be established all across Zambia, will open before the end of 2023. The mini-grids will both bring energy to remote areas and run as businesses; those living in zones where mini-grids will be introduced will have the opportunity to increase their income and enjoy better health services.

The project has received support from a Rockefeller Foundation implementation team titled ‘Sustainable Energy for All’. President Hichilema thanked the team for their assistance, and invited others to join the partnership. He added that other organisations and stakeholders were expected to take part in what will be a growing initiative.

Mr. Hichilema also highlighted the rich opportunity for Zambian people. He encouraged citizens to engage with the project and the business prospects, trade growth and community investment it will bring.
