Local Authority Workers to Receive Salary and Allowance Increase in 2025
Local authority workers are set to benefit from a salary hike starting in January 2025. Nicholas Phiri, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government, in collaboration with the workers' unions, has announced a nationwide salary increment of K500 for all council employees.
Phiri expressed confidence that the adjustment would enhance employee morale and productivity across councils. "The negotiations for the 2025 improved salaries and conditions of service for local authority employees have been concluded successfully," he said in a statement issued by Principal Public Relations Officer Liseli Kanyanga.
Union leaders have also welcomed the developments, praising the government’s efforts to address workers’ needs. Zambia United Local Authorities and Allied Workers Union (ZULAWU) President Emmanuel Mwinsa highlighted that, in addition to the salary increment, transport allowances have been raised by 2%, now accounting for 17% of salaries.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Lusaka, Mwinsa acknowledged the government’s role in improving conditions for local authority workers. He expressed optimism that the adjustments would not only motivate employees but also contribute to better service delivery across the country.
The new measures demonstrate the importance of investing in human capital to strengthen local governance and improve public services.
