Who Is Getting the Scholarships? Miti Asks
Executive Director of the Alliance for Community Action (ACC) has asked who is getting scholarships in a post on social media.
“Students who have failed to go to CBU and UNZA because they failed to raise registration fees or 25% of the fees should come together and make themselves known. This is so that the nation can have a visual idea of the desperate situation at Universities,” Miti writes.
“If it is loan and will be repaid, why not pay for all requirements for the most indigent?” she questioned.
“Then we need an audit of who is on the scholarship list. Zambians should know who government is paying for, seeing as the impoverished are denied scholarships and government acts like it cannot afford to care about the pain among the poor youth.”
“I can start the list. There is a young man from rural Zambia who got 7 division 1s including Additional Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. He is an orphan who lives in a village with his impoverished grandmother. He has just been denied a scholarship to go to UNZA. His results are shown below,” she continues.
“Another rural boy with brilliant marks has been granted 100% but cannot raise the K2300 required to register, today being the deadline. He has been desperately looking for help.
If these two cannot be fully paid for to get a university education by government, we must know who else is being paid for.
I encourage young people to come together to demand to know - who is getting the scholarships. If the money is limited, the first thing we must do is ensure that no one who can afford to pay relevant scholarship or loan.
Young people, no one will do this for you. Rise and demand that this public resource is accountably managed.”
