Covid-19 Cases Surge In Western Province
Cases of Covid-19 have surged in Western Province, with 153 positive test returned across the region, 72 of which were focused in Mongu district.
Western Province Health Director Francis Liywali has said it is possible to reduce the number of infections in the region, but only if citizens abide by Ministry of Health guidelines such as wearing face masks and regularly washing their hands.
“It is sad to note that 70% of people especially in rural areas have dropped their guard against the pandemic added that such action can act as catalysts for further transmission of the disease,” he said.
Mr Liywali’s office have deployed health workers to various border areas in the province, including the Katimamulilo border crossings in Sesheke district, to ensure that all travellers are tested for Covid-19 before entering the province.
Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Mukwambuyu Katungu has also complained of low levels of compliance, particularly among bar owners. Mr Katungu says many bar owners have continued to operate normally, despite government directives against doing so.
Evidence of such activity came to light during a police inspection of several bars in the province last night.
Mr Katungu has called a potential resurgence of Covid-19 ‘catastrophic’ and has urged the public to remain vigilant in their battle against the disease.
