1,065 Mulungushi Students Awarded Study Loans
1,065 first-year students at Mulungushi University have been awarded full or partial loans for the 2020/2021 academic year.
This is compared to just 300 loans from the same university in the previous academic year.
A spokesperson for the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) said 598 students had been awarded 100% loans, with a further 466 receiving 75% of their bills paid and one student granted a 50% loan.
HELSB said it received 1,218 applications: 796 from male applicants and 422 from female applicants. Only two applications were made by students living with disabilities.
Applicants were overwhelmingly interested in studying science: with 950 students requesting funding for science courses, compared to 268 for non-science courses.
The split between rural and urban applicants was more balanced, with 669 students coming from urban areas and 549 from the country.
The loans will be used to finance tuition fees and books allowances only.
