Four Siblings Arrested Over Witchcraft Claims

Four siblings have been arrested by police in Isoka district after they were found burying the corpse of their sister in front of their elder brother’s house, claiming that he had bewitched her.

Muchinga Police Commissioner Lizzie Machina told ZANIS that the unnamed suspects had accused their brother of killing their sister through witchcraft. She explained that accusing someone of witchcraft is an offence and thus instructed officers to arrest the suspects.

The sister was reportedly working in her field when she suddenly collapsed and was rushed to Isoka district hospital, where she later died on January 28.

Believing that their sister had been cursed, the brothers - together with several unknown people - dug a grave and buried their sister in front of the eldest brother’s house two days later.

Ms Machina stressed that the police could not allow innocent elderly citizens to be accused of witchcraft, as these allegations sometimes lead to murder.
