Authorities Investigate Chinese Man’s ‘Racist’ Trolley Ride

Authorities in Lusaka are considering deporting a Chinese man after a video emerged online of him riding a trolley being pulled by a native Zambian.

In a clip shared on Twitter the Chinese national is shown locking up his shop before climbing onto a trolley which is pulled by one of his workers.

Two people then confront the shop-owner, with one asking “Can you not walk?”. The pair then force him to step down.

Reacting to the video online, many commenters condemned the incident as demeaning and racist.

Ministry of Labour Permanent Secretary Chanda Kaziya said the incident would be investigated and that the shop-owner could be deported.

He said the government would not tolerate the mistreatment of Zambians by foreign businessmen.

Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa visited the shop over the weekend and reported that John Zulu - the man who pulled the trolley - had been given a new job by his boss’ landlord.

“The good news on carousel saga is that the landlord of the Mall Lamasat Ltd have offered John Zulu a job with their main premises management office,” he said.

According to Sampa, the landlords have even threatened to terminate their tenancy agreement with the Chinese national after he exhibited what they termed racial abuse towards a black employee.

The Chinese man has not commented.
