Eleven Teachers Suspended In Malpractice Scandal

Eleven teachers, nine from Mpongwe District and two from Chilanga District, have been suspended due to allegations of engagement in examination malpractice.

The news was announced by the Director of the Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ), Michael Chilala.

Dr Chilala explained that the teachers had assisted candidates in their 2022 examinations confirming that those involved included invigilators, supervisors and teachers.

He said, “Teachers in Mpongwe were charging 150 Kwacha to assist each pupil per subject.”

Also included in the nine were two head teachers and one deputy teacher.

The malpractice was going to take place during the ninth grade examinations due to take place next week.

Dr Chilala explained, “We also came across a case of planned involvement of grade nine examination which are starting on the 24th of November, 2022, and once we got the information, we quickly moved in to change the administrators of the school in Chilanga, we are a situation where in these two schools, the Head Teachers and Deputy Head Teachers have been moved.”

He also asked parents and guardians not to partake in cheating activities.

Meanwhile, the Zambian National Union of Teachers’ acting General Secretary Catherine Chinunda asked teachers to refrain from engaging in cheating.

She said, “Can those Headmasters and teachers stop what they are doing, as malpractice is a chargeable offence that can make them lose their employment, they are killing the nation.”
