President Hichilema Partners with Qatar for Zambian Education Scholarships

President Hakainde Hichilema has made the most of his trip to Qatar by meeting with the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) to explore ways in which Zambian students can qualify for scholarships in Qatar.

Since being elected president in August 2021, Mr. Hichilema and his New Dawn government have worked tirelessly to drive Zambian recovery. One long-term goal in the UPND’s sights is a higher quality of education. Mr. Hichilema gave a statement after his meeting with QFFD, where he insisted that “the one way Zambia can graduate from LDC status, is through human capital development.”

President Hichilema has reiterated throughout his time in office that education is the greatest equaliser, and the Government has enhanced a number of initiatives since the start of 2023 to improve the quality of, and access to, free education at primary and secondary levels in Zambia. The scholarships are likely to primarily focus on university-level tertiary education.

In his statement after meeting with QFFD Director General Khalifa Jassim Al-Kuwairi, the president said that the Education Above All (EAA) foundation would be involved in facilitating the scholarships.

Mr. Hichilema’s trip has so far been fruitful. Yesterday the Zambian president met with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Hichilema and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani discussed various projects to strengthen bilateral ties, including opportunities for investment in Zambia and the impending opening of the resident Zambian Embassy in Doha. Today, Mr Hichilema will visit the EARTHNA village to attend the EARTHNA summit, where practices for sustainability will be showcased.
