Search continues for Nangoma mine accident victims
Rescue efforts continue for trapped miners continue at Luili Mine in the Nangoma constituency of Mumbwa district, Central province following a collapse on 7 October.
The tragedy has already claimed ten lives, with their bodies recovered from the mine. Six miners were found alive and subsequently taken to Nangoma Mission hospital for treatment. It is thought that a total of 70 artisanal miners were on the site when the accident occurred.
Namukolo Hayumbu, the Mumbwa District Commissioner, has said that the search operation continues into its second day as teams work to locate any remaining victims.
Nangoma MP and Minister of Water Development and Sanitation Collins Nzovu has said he is “deeply saddened” by the tragic mining accident.
“We have rushed to the scene to assess the situation and provide support to the affected families. I am working closely with the rescue teams and relevant authorities to ensure every effort is made to retrieve those still trapped,” he added.
The minister also revealed he had visited the rescued survivors in hospital, four of whom have been discharged, while two are still receiving treatment.
According to Nzovu, President Hakainde Hichilema has been briefed on the accident and has directed a full-scale rescue operation to retrieve those still trapped and provide support to the bereaved families.
