Mealie Meal Scammers Arrested

Zambia National Service has been cracking down on mealie meal scammers. In its latest update on the subject it has confirmed the arrest of two Rwandese nationals by North Gate Police in Lusaka's Garden. The individuals were found to be in possession of a huge consignment of Eagle's mealie meal without a valid vendor's license.

A total of 250 25kg bags of Eagle’s mealie-meal was seized. It is understood that these were meant for repackaging into smaller quantities and that the scammers would thereby be depriving many Zambians from accessing the reasonably priced mealie meal.

According to an update provided by The Ministry of Information the seizure followed a tip-off from an alert member of the public. ZNS personnel, led by Deputy Provost Marshal Lieutenant Colonel Precious Mfula, conducted surveillance at Lusaka's National Housing Complex on Kasangula Road.

Assisted by the local residents, the troop uncovered more than 250 bags of 25kg mealie meal. More bags were also found stored inside a house.

Following the discovery ZNS Commander, Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi II has warned unscrupulous business people to stop exploiting Zambian by repacking and reselling mealie meal at exorbitant prices. He noted that anyone without a permit to sell Eagles mealie meal is restricted to purchasing a maximum of two bags and that this rule is in place to help ensure all citizens can access the staple food.
