64,000 Beneficiaries Receive Cash Transfers in Lusaka

The government has disbursed funds to over 64,000 beneficiaries under the Social Cash Transfer and Drought Emergency Cash Transfer programmes in the Lusaka District. This substantial payout represents approximately 80% of the targeted 80,000 beneficiaries.

Director of Social Welfare at the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Nelson Nyangu, highlighted the significance of this exercise. “We have reached the largest number of beneficiaries ever in Lusaka District,” Nyangu stated during an interview with ZNBC News.

Of the beneficiaries, around 57,000 are part of the Drought Emergency Cash Transfer Programme, while approximately 27,000 are enrolled in the Social Cash Transfer Programme. “This dual approach ensures that we address both immediate and long-term needs of our vulnerable population,” Nyangu explained.

A total of 40 million Kwacha has been allocated for this disbursement, conducted at 33 payment point throughout the city. The payment exercise, which commenced on 18 July, concluded today. A mop-up payment exercise will be conducted at the District Office for those who could not be paid within the initial timeframe.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude, with many stating the support has been crucial for their families. The government’s effort underscores its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, ensuring that aid reaches those in need efficiently and effectively.
