ZESCO Announces 4 Hours of Daily Power Supply and Improved Communication Measures
ZESCO has announced that residential areas will now receive a minimum of four hours of electricity each day. This improvement comes as a result of the company’s current power generation capacity and its ability to secure electricity imports, offering some relief to customers who have faced prolonged power outages.
During a Power Supply Update on Wednesday, ZESCO reaffirmed its commitment to transparent stakeholder engagement by introducing scheduled power rationing updates. This new initiative, set to begin in February 2025, will provide consumers with clearer expectations regarding electricity availability.
However, ZESCO noted that factors beyond its control may impact the reliability of supply, meaning the published schedules may not always be strictly followed. Technical faults, challenges in securing electricity imports, vandalism, and theft of electrical installations and equipment were highlighted as key risks that could disrupt planned power distribution.
The company further clarified that residential customers typically receive electricity in the evening, as this is when imported power becomes available. Locally generated daytime electricity is prioritised for essential services such as hospitals, schools, industries, and public institutions. Residential areas that receive power during the day are likely connected to shared supply lines with these critical sectors.
To improve communication and ensure customers remain informed, ZESCO is working on a rotating power supply schedule, which will be shared through SMS notifications, updates on the company’s Facebook page, and other official communication channels. This initiative aims to provide greater transparency and predictability, helping residents better manage their electricity usage during rationing periods.
