Two men arrested over alleged witchcraft plot against HH
Two men have been arrested in Lusaka on suspicion of plotting to use witchcraft against President Hakainde Hichilema.
Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri were arrested in the capital and charged under the country's Witchcraft Act. Police say the pair were allegedly hired to "use charms to harm" the president.
According to police, the suspects were recruited by Nelson Banda, brother of MP Emmanuel "Jay Jay" Banda. The MP, who has not been seen publicly since his arrest in Zimbabwe last month over robbery charges, is also accused of escaping custody in August whilst awaiting court proceedings.
According to police, the suspects were found with "assorted charms" including a live chameleon. They face charges of possessing charms, professing knowledge of witchcraft, and cruelty to wild animals. Police report the men admitted they had been promised over 2 million kwacha for their alleged mission.
Traditional and religious leaders across the country have voiced strong condemnation of these actions.
Chief Chisunka, chair of the Luapula Province Council of Chiefs, described witchcraft as a harmful practice. Speaking to ZNBC, the traditional leader called for decisive government action against perpetrators and suggested a comprehensive review of the country's Witchcraft Act to better address such incidents.
The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia also weighed in on the matter. Executive Director Andrew Mwenda argued that as a Christian nation Zambia should not tolerate witchcraft practices.
According to the police, Nelson Banda remains at large. Candunde and Phiri are in custody awaiting their court appearance, though no date has yet been announced.
