“Pivotal Moment” Says Hichilema, as State Counsels Sworn In

President Hichilema oversaw the swearing-in of State Counsels and Senior Government officials at State House yesterday, marking what he described as, "a pivotal moment in our nation's journey toward justice, integrity, and the rule of law.” State Counsels are responsible for representing the government in legal matters, providing legal advice, and prosecuting cases on behalf of the state.

The newly sworn-in State Counsels include the Honorable Jacob Jack Mwiimbu (MP), Mrs. Frances Mwangala Ifunga Zaloumis, Mr. Arshad Abdulla Dudhia, and Mrs. Kondwa Emily Sakala Chibiya. Also sworn in was the Honorable Mrs. Nelly Butete Kashumba Mutti, the first woman to serve as the Speaker of the National Assembly.

The President commended the experience and integrity of those sworn-in, stating that they will “embody the highest ideas of fairness, equity, and compassion.”

Other senior official’s sworn in include Dr. Choolwe Beyani as Chairperson of the Civil Service Commission, Father Joe Komakoma as Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Beatrice Kiluya Mpanga as Deputy Director-General of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), and Ambassador Lazarous Kapambwe as Special Envoy to the President. The President praised Ambassador Kapambwe’s “exceptional and distinguished service to the country over the decades as a career diplomat.”

In a statement, the President emphasised the need to address human rights abuses in the country, and work to eradicate corruption: “We must continue pursuing activities that contribute to the promotion of rights and freedoms of the citizenry…a just and fair society is important in a democratic nation such as ours.”

President Hichilema also called for constitutional amendments to improve gender representation in official positions, demonstrating the government's commitment to gender equality. He also announced measures to reduce government expenditure, with a focus on prudent resource management.
