President Hichilema Addresses Nation on Progress of National Values and Principles
In an address to the nation today, President Hichilema provided an overview of the country's progress in adhering to national values and principles, as mandated by the constitution. Covering a range of topics from economic policies to social welfare initiatives, the President's speech aimed to underscore key government priorities and strategies for advancement.
President Hichilema encouraged citizens to “think local in consumption choices,” and directed various government ministries to buy their uniforms from domestic manufacturers. He noted that intra-economic transactions among local companies not only work to stimulate job creation but also support local businesses, fostering economic growth within the country.
In line with efforts to enhance revenue generation, President Hichilema emphasised the importance of tax compliance among citizens. He highlighted the government’s progress in increasing awareness on the matter, stating that "the government will continue to regularly report to citizens on how their tax revenues are utilised.”
President Hichilema also called on Members of Parliament to support the government’s realignment of resources in the 2024 national budget, which was announced earlier this week. In the midst of a devastating drought, funds have been redirected to the vital areas of food security and energy.
The President reaffirmed the government's dedication to democracy, freedom of speech, and human rights, as proven by the Varieties Democracy report, which shows Zambia is in the top three most democratising countries globally. He called for law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigations before arrests and to allow timely access to bail and bond for eligible individuals.
Addressing public health concerns, President Hichilema acknowledged ongoing efforts to maintain a clean water supply to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and typhoid. He also outlined plans to implement a revised ICT policy to address misuse of social media platforms for malicious purposes.
Condemning rising instances of gang activity and substance abuse, the President underscored the need for collaborative efforts to address these societal challenges. He also spoke out against gender-based violence, child marriages, and teenage pregnancies, calling on stakeholders to join the fight against antisocial behaviour.
President Hichilema also announced the momentum gained in planting two million trees by 2028, with six hundred and forty-five thousand already planted on 538 hectares of land. He also called on citizens to refrain from burning bushes because of the harmful impact on livestock and wildlife.
Addressing infrastructure development, the President reaffirmed the government's commitment to constructing dams and irrigation mechanisms across the country to secure water resource management and agricultural productivity.
Finally, President Hichilema noted the positive impact of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), citing examples of previously unemployed and vulnerable youths who have now gained access to education and skills training through the initiative. This, he said, would reduce the chance of criminal involvement and improve the socioeconomic prospects of communities across the country. “We remain committed to fostering good values and call on each and every citizen to do their part.”
