U.S. Government Allocates K9.2 Billion to Aid Fight Against HIV/AIDS
In a substantial boost to Zambia's ongoing efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, the U.S. government has released K9.2 billion as part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
At the unveiling of the aid package, U.S. Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales reiterated America's dedication to supporting Zambia's fight against the virus. Gonzales praised Zambia's progress over the past two decades, facilitated by PEPFAR assistance.
The U.S. has committed to supporting aims to assist Zambia in achieving its goal of eradicating HIV as a public health threat by 2030. Health Minister Sylvia Masebo expressed gratitude for PEPFAR's continuous support.
In addition to the PEPFAR aid, Zambia's fight against HIV/AIDS received a further boost as the U.S. government donated nearly 15,000 vials of an injectable HIV prevention medication. This donation marks Zambia as the first country outside the U.S. to provide this medication to the public. The medication is expected to protect 2,000 Zambians against HIV for one year.
Education Minister Douglas Syakalima noted collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health to educate more pupils about HIV/AIDS, hoping to see numbers decline through raising awareness and teaching measures to prevent infection.
