Hichilema Initiates K2.8 Billion Chingola-Chililabombwe Road Overhaul
President Hichilema has commissioned the reconstruction of the 35-kilometer Chingola Chililabombwe road in Chililabombwe.
The K2.8 billion road is the first project initiated under the public-private partnership funding model.
Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo hailed the road project as a significant achievement in the government’s plan to improve national road infrastructure.
The Chingola Chililabombwe road is a vital passage for the economies of the SADC and Great Lakes regions.
Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi said the project will prioritise cost-effectiveness, quality, and timely completion.
Chingola MP Chipoka Mulenga highlighted the road's role in alleviating congestion at the Kasumbalesa border post between Zambia and the DRC, one of the busiest borders in the country for trade.
Emmanuel Mbambiko, Chairperson of the Workers Compensation Fund Control Board, said the construction phase is projected to create 300 jobs in the region and generate K35 million annually for the board.
John Kasanga, Chairperson of the Public Service Pensions Fund Board, said the board's investment in public-private partnerships will support the pension fund and reduce pressure on the government.
