Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya Interconnector Project Complete by 2026

Energy Minister, Peter Kapala, confirmed Zambia’s participation in the K7 billion Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya (ZTK) interconnector project. The announcement was made during the 56th SAPP Executive Committee meeting in Lusaka.

Interconnectors are high-voltage cables that connect the electricity systems of neighbouring countries. The project will link Zambia to Tanzania, connecting the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) to the East Africa Power Pool (EAPP). The ZTK interconnector will boost electricity trade, enhance energy security, and improve reliability across SAPP and EAPP member states. Completion is anticipated by 2026.

Funding ZTK interconnector will come from the International Development Association (IDA), the European Union, and the Commonwealth Development Office of the United Kingdom.

As part of the project, ZESCO plans to commission the second 330 kilovolts Kabwe-Pensulo line this year.

SAPP Executive Committee Chairperson Victor Mapani praised the project, noting the need for economically viable energy projects in the region.

ZESCO Board Chairperson Vickson Ncube urged energy experts to address the current electricity challenges in the region by creating additional power interconnectors.

ZANACO and ABSA Bank have pledged support to diversify the energy sector.
