Minister Stresses Importance of Infrastructure Development and the Role of PPPs
Zambian Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi emphasised the critical role of infrastructure development for Zambia and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at the Infrastructure Africa 2024 Conference in Cape Town. "Sustained economic growth will lift the Zambian people out of poverty," he stated, highlighting the necessity of functional economic sectors such as mining, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.
Milupi detailed Zambia's infrastructure projects, including the redevelopment of the Lobito and Nacala Corridors, which will link Zambia to ports in Angola and Mozambique. He also noted the importance of modernising railway infrastructure to improve regional connectivity.
To tackle financing challenges, Zambia has embraced public-private partnerships (PPPs). “We have decided to liberate the private sector in Zambia!” Milupi declared, underscoring the government's commitment to collaboration.
South African Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, opened the conference, calling for unity in Africa's infrastructure development efforts. This platform, he noted, will connect industry stakeholders and promote investment in Africa's growth.
In addition, the Zambian government aims to leverage its strategic location to enhance regional integration by developing alternative corridors to international markets. This initiative is expected to foster economic growth and regional trade.
