Copper Queens Face Super Falcons In AWCON Showdown
The Zambia Women National Team will play its second match this afternoon with a top of the bill clash against defending champions Nigeria.
Zambia opened its campaign with a 5-0 hammering of two-time champions Equatorial Guinea while the highly rated Nigerians were edged 1-0 by Banyana Banyana of South Africa 1-0.
Coach Bruce Mwape’s side has been modest about its ambitions but given their strong start means that their opponents will no longer be deceived about their prowess.
Skipper Barbara Banda is expected to return to the fold after missing out the first game due to suspension which could give the attack added impetus.
In her absence the team had new leaders stepping in the void with the versatile Mary Mwakapila and the jet-heeled Rachael Kundananji among the stand-out performers.
It could be a long night given that Nigeria is wounded from their opening day fixture and will be looking to bounce back.
It is the second time Zambia is making an appearance at the Africa Women Championship after their debut in 2014 in Namibia.
Kickoff for the match is 17:30 hours Zambian time and pay television channel SuperSport will beam the match live on SS4.
A win could take Zambia to the semi-finals and within a place at the 2019 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by France.
