ZESCO Out Of The Champions League
Zambian champions Zesco United has been booted out of the CAF Champions League by giants TP Mazembe after the two sides drew 1-1 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium this afternoon.
TP Mazembe did the hard work at home where the won 1-0 and added an away goal today to claim their place among Africa’s finest sides with the aggregate score being 2-1 in favour of the visitors. Lazarous Kambole had given Zesco United a false start with a predatory strike in the box on 12 minutes but the experienced Tresor Mputu cancelled out the goal with a fine header in the 48th minute.
Mputu benefitted from some suspect defending from Mwila Phiri under whose watch the goal was scored.
TP Mazembe started with two Zambian players in the first eleven in 2012 Africa Cup winner Nathan Sinkala and Kabaso Chongo. Skipper Rainford Kalaba was a late second half substitute to give him a triumphant return to his former club Zesco United.
Zesco United will now be relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup.
Green Eagles is in action in the Confederation Cup later today against Algerian side Hussein Dey FC.
The two sides drew 0-0 in the first leg. On Sunday Nkana will be away to Simba SC in Tanzania while Green Buffaloes host Sfaxien who butchered them 4-1 in the first leg.
Nkana won the home match 2-1 and will be hoping to finish off the job away in Tanzania.
