Guardiola: Manchester City Can Close Gap on Liverpool
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said he believes his side can close the gap on Premier League title rivals Liverpool before the end of the season.
Liverpool are currently undefeated from their first eight games and have opened up the largest lead over second place at this stage in the season in the Premier League era.
Current holders Manchester City have not got off to their most glittering start; it is in fact their worst since the 2013/14 season under Manuel Pellegrini, although they did go on to win the title that year.
Speaking to BBC Sport earlier in the week, Guardiola was confident that the eight-point gap could be overcome.
“The distance is big, I know that”, he said. “For many circumstances, they [Liverpool] didn’t drop points. It is better not to think one team is eight points ahead. It is only October. There are still a lot of games”.
Last season the two sides were engaged in a dogged battle that went right up to the end of the season, with City making up a ten-point gap, although that was 19 matches in, and they had a game in hand.
They are hoping to become the first side since Manchester United to win the Premier League in three successive seasons, when Sir Alex Ferguson presided over an era of dominance between 2007-9.
