Zambia’s Sports Minister Urges Associations to Seek Self-Reliance
Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu has called on Zambia’s sports associations to adopt proactive fundraising strategies and engage both the government and private sector for sponsorships. Speaking to ZNBC Sports in Lusaka, Nkandu reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting sports development in 2025 but cautioned against over-reliance on state funding.
Nkandu underscored the importance of financial independence, urging sports associations to take the initiative in securing resources. He highlighted the pivotal role that partnerships with the business community play in boosting Zambia’s competitiveness on the international sports stage. Additionally, he stressed the need for comprehensive budget planning to promote transparency and accountability in the utilisation of funds.
This call to action aligns with Zambia’s broader strategy to elevate its global presence by fostering stronger, self-reliant sports organizations. By diversifying funding sources, associations can unlock new opportunities for athletes, expand development programs, and ensure a brighter future for Zambian sports.
Nkandu’s remarks come at a pivotal time when increased collaboration between government, associations, and private sector stakeholders is seen as essential to building a resilient and dynamic sports sector.
