Premier League boosts women's football with K1.6 million grant

The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has announced a £67,000 grant to support women's football across the Women's Super League and National Division One League. All 49 teams in both leagues will benefit from this initiative.

Super League clubs will receive K100,000 each, whilst Division One teams will get K50,000. The grants will be disbursed in two instalments, with the first payment due this month and the second between January and March 2025.

This marks the first time National Division One teams have received such financial support, highlighting ZPL's commitment to advancing women's football in Zambia.

ZPL board chairman Kephas Katongo expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasising its role in professionalising and commercialising the sport. He noted that this is a benefit of the Football Association of Zambia's delinking initiative, which aims to separate ZPL from the association for more efficient operation.

Katongo encouraged teams to develop strategies promoting operational efficiency and financial independence, stressing the importance of these grants for the ongoing development of women's football in Zambia.
