Mpima Teenagers Buried Alive In Mining Accident
Two teenagers in Mpima, Kabwe District have died after their tunnel caved in on them while the pair were mining stones.
Central Province police commissioner Chola Katanga identified the victims as 19 year-old Evans Kanta and 18 year-old Godfrey Simfukwe, both from Mpima.
He said the incident occurred on Thursday at around 12:45 when the two young men had visited a local quarry to mine stones.
Police and the fire brigade have since visited the quarry to retrieve the bodies, which have been taken to Kabwe Central Hospital mortuary. Commissioner Katanga said the men’s next of kin have been informed.
He observed that a lot of people in the area had been taking part in informal stone mining but that the police could not say whether it was as a main source of income.
