Country Unites to Combat Cholera Outbreak

President Hakainde Hichilema has issued a directive urging all stakeholders to address the challenges posed by the cholera outbreaks in Zambia.

Speaking at the Provincial Epidemic Preparedness meeting in Ndola, Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) Director Roma Chilengi reiterated the call for collaborative action within the health sector to tackle the issue.

The meeting, attended by government ministers, heads of departments, and key stakeholders, revealed that cases of cholera in the Copperbelt region are escalating. Acting Copperbelt Provincial Health Director Christopher Dube said the situation is urgent and emphasised the need for proactive measures.

Acting Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Daniel Kamenga advised citizens to remain vigilant, noting the threat posed to the country’s health security. Despite efforts to mitigate the spread of the illness, the situation requires attentiveness and collective action.

Health Minister Sylvia Masebo noted a reduction in cholera cases nationwide. However, she stressed that more work is needed to eradicate the disease. Masebo also thanked the media for raising awareness about cholera prevention.

Masebo’s remarks came during the reception of items donated by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Zambia to aid in the fight against cholera. The donation, valued at over K100,000, included blankets, personal protective equipment, and hygienic materials. AHF Country Programme Director Martin Matabishi praised the government's collaborative environment and pledged continued support to supplement healthcare efforts in fighting the epidemic.
