Police Explain Why Mabumba Was Not Arrested For Porn Video
Police in Lusaka have explained their decision not to arrest former Education Minister David Mabumba after a pornographic video circulated last year depicting the cabinet minister naked and apparently masturbating.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo told journalists that the video was not made by Mr Mabumba but rather recorded without his consent in an attempt to extort money from him. As such he was not guilty of any crime.
“It was done without him knowing and was later circulated after a failed attempt to extort money from him”.
Ms Katongo said police are still searching for the person who recorded and circulated the video.
Her comments came in response to media accusations of double standards after police arrested a couple in Lusaka for producing similarly obscene content.
At the time of the video’s initial circulation it prompted widespread outrage and condemnation from many Zambians.
UPND Deputy Secretary General Patrick Mucheleka branded the video “one of the lowest moments in our country’s history” and called the entire PF government “morally bankrupt”.
Mr Mabumba was immediately dismissed from his ministerial post following the video, to be replaced by then-Water Development Minister Dennis Wanchinga.
