President Hichilema Thanks U.S. for Quick Action on Lobito Corridor Rail Project
President Hakainde Hichilema thanked the United States for its prompt actions in advancing the Lobito Corridor Rail project. The acknowledgment came during a meeting at the State House this morning with a delegation of U.S. Senators, led by Senator Patty Murray.
The Lobito Rail line will connect the Atlantic and Indian Oceans through Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Passing through mineral-rich areas, the project is expected to benefit agriculture, tourism, and mining sectors. The two countries also discussed further collaborations in fostering job creation, particularly among youth and women.
Senator Patty Murray, who led the U.S. delegation, highlighted the broader economic benefits that the project will bring to Zambia.
Additionally, Senator Murray pledged U.S. support in addressing challenges such as drought and ensuring family security. She noted the significant investment made by the U.S in Zambia since 2000, amounting to over K178 billion across various sectors, including public health, education, and food security.
President Hichilema thanked the U.S. for their support in the recent debt restructuring process.
The delegation's visit is part of broader discussions on investments and strengthening political, economic, and security ties in Southern African countries such as Malawi, Angola, and Botswana.
