President Hichilema Officiates International Women’s Day Celebrations

President Hichilema delivered an address at the country’s International Women’s Day celebrations in Livingstone today. Speaking as the Guest of Honour, the President’s speech acknowledged and celebrated the contributions of women “contributions of women in Zambia, the African continent, and the global community.”

The event, themed ‘Invest in Women and Girls: Accelerate Progress’, served as a platform for reflection on the importance of investing in the empowerment and advancement of women. "Investing in women is a moral obligation,” the President said, underscoring the role women play in helping to build a stronger society.

Acknowledging the strides made by his UPND government, President Hichilema noted the increased representation of women in key positions, including the Vice President and the Speaker of the National Assembly. He also highlighted the presence of women in the judicial system, acknowledging the Judge President of the Constitutional Court, Justice Prof. Mulela Margaret Munalula. However, he emphasised, "we can do more," signalling a commitment to furthering gender equality and women's participation in all sectors.

President Hichilema commended the Constituency Development Fund, which has facilitated opportunities for girls to acquire skills in traditionally male-dominated fields like carpentry and agriculture. He also praised the increasing number of female business owners and women in the banking sector for their role in driving economic growth and development and acting as role models to young girls.

Finally, President Hichilema thanked the Non-Governmental Organisations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) and the United Nations for their commitment and support in collaborating with the Zambian government to create more opportunities for women. The President concluded his address saying, ”God bless all the women and girls of Zambia. God bless the investment in women.”

The commemoration was followed by a march featuring participation from schools, hospitals, charities, and other organisations to support the advancement of women’s rights and gender equality.
