Tributes paid to Justice Silungwe
On 8 July, crowds gathered at the Anglican Catherdral to pay their final respects to the late Hon. Mr Justice Annel M. Silungwe. He passed away on 30 June aged 88, at the Coptic Hospital in Lusaka.
Silungwe was Zambia’s first Chief Justice and served in the post from 1975 to 1992. A firm believer in the rule of law, Silungwe he marked history as the first Zambian to take charge of the legal affairs of the country. He served the country in a distinguished legal career in several jurisdictions including Namibia and the Seychelles.
Commenting on the significant contributions made to the Zambian legal system throughout his life, Mr Justice Sakala said, “he was jovial and humble, yet very firm and orderly in his duties.”
He made particular contributions in promoting access to justice without discrimination.
During the official funeral, President Hichilema encouraged Zambians to follow the selfless legacy of Silungwe, as well as for the justice system to continue his example of professionalism and dedication to upholding the rule of law.
Hichilema’s respect for the Chief Justice was also emulated in his post on X/Twitter, “his legacy of unwavering dedication to justice transcended borders. A true champion of the rule of law.”
