Kabila Quits Nkana Top Job

The president of Nkana Football Club, Everisto Kabila, has resigned from his position and will be replaced by his deputy, Joseph Silwamba.

The club’s sponsors, Mopani Copper Mines Plc, confirmed Mr Kabila’s resignation on Sunday and announced that current vice-president Jospeh Silwamba would be taking over from July 1st. 

Mr Kabila has been president of Nkana FC since 2015, having also served as vice-president of the Zambia Rugby Union in 2012 and as a board member of the National Sports Council of Zambia. 

In a statement, Mr Kabila said he was proud of the club and wished its players and executives the best of luck in the future. 

“It’s been a great journey together since 2014. The journey has not been easy but we soldiered on and scored many successes together. I must admit that there were many areas that we didn’t do well and require improvement. The club is so demanding and requires commitment and great focus and I have no doubt that our current executive, secretaries, technical bench, players and soccer fans at large will soldier on and make this wonderful club a successful,” he said. 

The president said he had indicated his desire to resign to Mopani’s management earlier in the year, saying that the 2019/20 season would be his last. 

Under Mr Kabila’s leadership, Nkana finished second in the 2018 Super League and reached the quarter finals of the CAF Confederations Cup. Nkana also won the Barclays Cup in 2018 and the the Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield for two years running in 2018 and 2019.
