Matero Stadium Bid Winner To Be Revealed In 3 Weeks
Lusaka City Council has announced it will reveal the winner of the bid for the Matero Stadium, home to the Lusaka Tigers and Matero United, in three weeks’ time.
Three developers are currently in the running to manage the stadium: Eden University, Lamasat and Dascan.
The announcement comes after proposals passed through the first committee stage last week, which will be followed by further review beginning on 18th September.
Lusaka City Council decided to advertise the lease for Matero stadium on June 28th 2019, prompting outrage from current leaseholder and Mayor of Lusaka, Miles Sampa.
Mr Sampa has since threatened legal action against town clerk Alex Mwansa, who is overseeing the bidding process.
Responding to Mr Sampa’s threats, Mr Mwansa explained that Mr Sampa was invited to apply to renew his lease along with everyone else.
“these are public amenities, so it does not matter whether you are a town clerk, a council employee or councillor – we are all treated the same. So all those that were interested in the property were advised to apply and he didn’t apply,” he said.
Mr Mwansa asked for patience from the remaining applicants, adding that a final decision will be relayed to them directly.
