Zambia Defeat Comoros With A Late Score In Nail-Biting Qualifier
In a race against the clock, Zambia was able to defeat Comoros 2-1 in the second group game of the 2023 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Lusaka’s National Heroes Stadium last night.
In the 88th minute midfielder, Klings Kangwa was able to score the winning free-kick bringing home the victory for the Chipolopolo Boys. The kick resulted in Zambia being able to claim all three points ensuring that they are now level with the Comoros team on the leaderboard.
Despite a slow start to the game with Comoros’ El Fardou Ben Mohammed was able to score in the 13th minute of the game due to a lack of communication between Zambian goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata and defender Tandi Mwape.
The first goal left the Zambian team shaken with Fashion Sakala, Zambia’s striker forcing Ali Ahamada in Comoros' goal into saving the ball with two attempts.
Ali was able to save a shot by Edward Chilufya at the 9-minute mark of the match.
Zambia continued their attack and had many opportunities to level the score however, were still unable to level the tally.
Coming up to half-time, Captain Enock Mwepu was able to score following a chest rebound from the corner.
Following halftime, Zambia was once again close to scoring but the attempt by M’Dahoma was tipped over the crossbar by Nsabata.
But soon the team faced an even larger challenge as experienced left wing-back Rodrick Kabwe was forced to leave the pitch due to injury.
In a nail-biting final half, Patson Daka nearly scored the winner when he was able to outrun his marker.
Two minutes before full time, Kings Kangwa was able to score the winning goal and bring home the victory for Zambia. The goal materialised through a stunning free-kick from the edge of the box.
The win reflected the first competitive victory under the new leadership of Croatian coach Alijoša Asanović.
