Zambia Women’s Team Qualify For Women’s World Cup
Zambia has qualified for the Women’s World Cup following their win at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) on Wednesday.
This is the first time the country will appear at the World Cup.
During the match against Senegal, Hazel Nali, proved the hero of the game when she was able to save multiple penalties.
Nali was also able to step up herself and settle the shootout 4-2 sending Zambia to their first Wafcon semi-finals.
The match started tensely after Senegal opened the scoring when captain, Mbayang Sow crossed deep onto the head of Nguenar Ndiaye putting the ball past Hazel Nali.
Following this Zambia scored due to a crucial mistake made by Senegalese goalkeeper Tenning Sene.
The game then went into extra time and penalties during which Lushomo Mweemba headed the ball against the Senegal crossbar.
This proved opportunistic to Zambia, whereby following a missed penalty by Senegal, the women’s team were able to win the game.
The victory is even more impressive considering the absence of Barbra Banda who was forced to miss the tournament following ‘gender eligibility’ issues.
