Zambian Ranger Ambushed and Killed in Rebel Attack in Burkina Faso

Rory Young, the Zambian-born Irish ranger, has been killed in Burkina Faso alongside two Spanish journalists as they filmed a documentary in the country.

The three individuals were in the area to film a documentary about anti-poaching activities in Western Africa before being attacked by an armed group.

The journalists sadly killed alongside Mr Young have been named as David Beriain and Roberto Fraile, whose deaths were confirmed by Prime Minister Pedro Sànchez of Spain.

Burkino Faso has seen a rise in similar attacks from several armed groups, many of which are linked to the Islamic State and Al Qaeda.

Chetenga Wildlife, which Mr Young was the co-founder and chief executive, released a statement following the attack confirming his death.

“It is with deepest sorrow and regret that Chengeta Wildlife confirms the death of Rory Young, our co-founder and CEO. Rory was leading a wildlife protection patrol in Arly National Park, Burkina Faso on 26 April 2021 when they were attacked by terrorists which resulted in his death and that of two Spanish journalists who were capturing his efforts to protect precious wildlife”, the statement read.

It has been reported that 10 people have also been killed in similar attacks since Sunday.
